TRW Coolant Disposal Unit
In 1999 Cardev International Ltd installed a nano-filtration membrane based coolant disposal unit (CDU) at the Washington factory of TRW Automotive Ltd.
TRW, which currently produces 30 million engine valves a year, were then incurring coolant disposal costs of around £2,000.00 per month.
The Cardev CDU has a process capacity of 2 million litres per year and is PLC controlled, requiring no labour input from TRW.

The permeate (clean water) produced by the CDU meets the criteria established by the local water authority for disposal down a foul drain and is also used by TRW as a top up for a centralised component wash down system.
The concentrate waste, which has a high calorific value, is taken away free of charge by a waste oil contractor for re-use elsewhere in industry.
With a payback period of 12 months, and a considerable reduction in the environmental contamination caused by the disposal of the waste coolant, TRW are extremely pleased at the reliability and low maintenance costs of the CDU. They estimate that, despite an increase in the amount of waste coolant being produced due to higher production levels, savings in excess of £1,000.00 per week are being achieved on previous waste disposal costs.
